    Hello

Odd that you are interested in Robert’s “collaborative works” since he was apparently content for so long to tinker at home, albeit with admirable home-made revolutionary intent.

Not a natural collaborator perhaps. Discuss

Gerry, we agree: I don’t believe that Robert’s primary inclination is to collaborate with others (except, of course, in order to record his own albums). He does a fine version of a hermit in the woods – although he lacks Richard Rolle’s devotional ardour – and uses collaboration as a counterweight to solitary composition. It is a way of stretching beyond his ‘comfort zone’ while delivering to the notion of community that underpins his political thinking.

There is another aspect: ‘improvisation’ can be on a motif, as in Bach variations, or towards a work with and through others, as in Coltrane. The former is Robert at home; the latter Robert with Hopper et al. What’s your take on this?

    Er, hello.
I’ve no idea how I became a member of this forum, but it came as quite a pleasant surprise.
OK, my name is Dave, and I live in north Wales.
I’ve been listening to RW in his various guises, and with different bands for what is probably far too long, but nothing can stop me now.
I’m going to have a look through all the posts now and see if I can learn anything, or maybe even add a few dazzling witticisms.
    Bye for now.

Welcome, Daven; we’re a curious lot who look forward to enjoying your curiosity. As the moderator I try to stay behind the scenes; instead I find myself behind the play. Many list members know more than I do about Robert Wyatt. That, of course, is the point: to share, then learn, without hierachies. For a few minutes each day this list is a Utopian folly where everyone can build his or her castle in the air.
