Resisting the crass temptation to sing Bert Bacharach’s song, I want to ask after Robert’s long-standing collaboration with Alfie. Elton Dean has described how she beat down doors to make solo opportunities for Robert following his departure from the increasingly instrumental ‘Soft Machine’. She has given his albums distinctive images which speak to childhood. In the cover notes to “Shleep’ Robert writes: “The songs are collaborations too: some the result of writing words for other people’s tunes, some written to Alfie’s words, and in the case of ‘Alien’, actually written with Alfie.’ Clearly she is integral to Robert’s life and work. So how did they meet, has Alfie worked independently of Robert, and if so with whom?

And If Alfie has exhibitions or alike anywhere?

    And whatabout

    Bel Air

It certainly seems that Alfie’s been an integral part of Robert’s creative life since at least his solo years. I feel her influence on almost all of his work, in a wonderful way I might add.

The inlay note by Robert on the Rock Bottom booklet I find to be the most touching insight, coupled with that gorgeous photo.

Let’s hear it for the Alife!
