The holidays, which we all look forward to, offer us an opportunity to explore. They also find us bored, looking for ways to squander our time. So here’s an after-dinner game: “Choose a year (any year), then visit You Tube to find music videos that speak to both the time and your taste as it was then.” If nothing else, it’s a way to laugh at yourself…

1976 (yes, I’ve left out The Eagles, Abba, The Bee Gees, Queen and Donna Summer)

i have to admit to spending more time than is good for me watching clips on youtube. just when you think there can’t possibly be anything by (obscure band name here), sure enough, something pops up. some i’ve enjoyed seeing are steamhammer from the beat club 1969, mallard from a german tv show mid 70’s (and if you don’t know, mallard are zoot horn rollo and rockette morton from captain beefheart’s magic band, plus keyboards drums and vocals), countless bonzo dog band clips, weather report from the early 70’s with an expanded line up that includes john surman on sax and others.
and max, i really dug the steve hillage and gil evans clips. it was great to see george adams with gil, but i thought it was unfortunate that whoever had the camera on drummer sue evans felt it necessary to zoom in on her breasts.

Yes, the cameraman – it was undoubtedly a man – obviously covered sports most of the time. Can’t you see him zooming in on the cleavage at the test match? To serious matters: I’ve never heard George Adams play better, even with the late Mingus group he and Don Pullen were such a prominent part of. And the Hillage clip reminded me of how artful his artlessness is.

Feel free to post links to your YouTube treasures.
