upcoming wyatt / soft machine tidbits

Postby zeebras » Sat Sep 03, 2005 1:06 am

here's a heads up on some upcoming releases sure to be of interest to wyatters everywhere.
steve from wayside mentions two enticing discs coming down the chute. one is an as yet untitled soft machine cd / dvd package featuring a concert from oct 1970, plus a 20 minute dvd with a performance from "beat club" march 1971, including 8 minutes of footage shot but never shown. the second is the wyatt / drury lane cd, release date oct 11. no mention of the label. steve tells us it's not the entire show, but 14 tracks, including all of "rock bottom". let the rejoicing begin.
lastly, a gentleman by the name of graham bennett has penned a booked entitled "soft machine - out- bloody- rageous". amazon uk are offering it as a pre-sale, and more info about the book can be found on the amazon web site.

here's a couple more:
moonjune records have announced two items for january 2006 release. one is a studio recording by the soft machine legacy (dean, hopper, marshall and etheridge), the second is a live soft machine concert from bremen 1975 featuring the "bundles" line up.

Heard on belgian radio this morning that Robert Wyatt appears on the upcoming David Gilmour album (out in april or may next year - not sure of this), along with Phil Manzanera and other guests.

every monday, i receive an email from wayside music letting me know what's new in stock. the email always concludes with a list of "coming soon" titles. the last month or so, the list has included this tantalizing entry for a soft machine release (and i quote):
"JUST when you were thinking that there was nothing else that could appear from the vaults, a really amazing archival release from a period hardly touched upon . . ."
i think most people would agree that a karl jenkins led machine could be a period hardly touched upon, but i'm thinking that's not a likely candidate for a really amazing release. there has also been a dvd of a montreux performance of the bundles era band rumoured. past releases have, for the most part, been by editions of the band that included wyatt. so what's hardly been touched upon? how about something with andy summers in the band? this is purely conjecture, but i for one would love to hear something from this edition of soft machine.
there is no word on when or who will be releasing this disk.

Speaking of Soft Machine (re)releases, a few days ago I posted the following question on the What's Rattlin forum re the August 2009 reissues of "The Soft Machine" and "Volume 2", described as "taken from the American (and presumably) original master tapes":

Does anybody know if these two new releases sound better than the Water Records 2007 re-releases (water195 & water196) of the same albums in two separate CDs, "mastered for reissue by Gary Hobish"?
I never knew which was the source for those Water reissues: the liner notes told nothing about that, while the liner notes of the Soft Machine's "Out-Bloody-Rageous - An Anthology 1967-1973" double cd (released by Sony Bmg in 2005) clearly stated "24-bit remastering from the original master tapes by Paschal Byrne of the Audio Archiving Company, London" (and compilation, tape
research and production were credited to Eclectic-Esoteric Recordings' Mark Powell).
So, are the most recent Umc (Universal?) using those 24-bit remasterings from the original master tapes (as the inclusion of Love Makes Sweet Music b/w Feelin' Reelin' Squeelin', already included in the above mentioned anthology, may suggest)?

Ciao

here's more info on the upcoming soft machine archival release:
a cd/dvd from a concert in hamburg germany may 17 1973. recorded shortly after hugh has left, so we have the babbington/jenkins/marshall/ratledge band, but on the second half they are joined by art themen on sax and gary boyle on guitar. audio and visual are said to be fantastic. this could be interesting.

This is a message posted on the Reel Recordings forum:

SOFT MACHINE ~ LIVE AT HENIE ONSTAD ART CENTRE 1971
(RR014/015) Two compact discs with bonus CD-ROM

Reel Recordings is pleased to announce the imminent release of, what is in our experience, the finest recording of the classic Soft Machine quartet ever committed to tape. There was never another band that rose to the heights that Mike Ratledge, Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, and Robert Wyatt did, nor are succinct descriptions of their music applicable here. Therefore, with much to celebrate about this exciting double cd set, we have complimented this simply stunning concert performance with a specially designed CD-ROM. This colourfully presents an extensive eight-chapter essay: The Soft Machine Sound: An Acoustic Electronic Experience Examined, replete with previously unseen photos and unheard recording extracts. Hats off to the Henie Onstad Art Centre in Oslo, Norway for allowing our label of love to care for their extraordinary direct-to-Studer, two- track ambient recording. Additionally, we offer our deeply felt appreciation to Robert and Mike, as well as Elton's and Hugh's estate, for their enthusiastic approval. We hope we have done justice to the distinguished history of the Henie Onstad Art Centre and the Soft Machine recorded legacy, with the listeners’ approval in mind. Your first opportunity to knock on our mail order door will arrive on November 1, 2009.
